Meet Donna

Donna is the home manager for the Shepherd's House, a homeless shelter in Tullahoma, TN. " We talked about planting a garden to help bring healthy additions to our shelter's table - but we just didn't know where to start. When we heard there was an organization that was willing to help us, we jumped at the chance!"

"Partners in Wellness staff and volunteers helped us plan the garden and get seed and plant donations. The garden partners checked in on us to make sure things were going well. They even helped us with the weeding!"

Partners in Wellness, Community Gardens

Planting and caring for a garden is a wellness activity on many levels. For the Shepherd's House, the primary objective was to supplement an already stretched food budget and to offer healthy fresh foods to the children and adults residing in the shelter. However, the garden ended up being more than just "food for the body"; it also served as "food for the soul." As residents and volunteers worked side by side in the garden, many shared poignant stories about gardens they recalled from their youth. Some had grown up on farms; others remembered helping in their grandparents' gardens. The shelter's garden served to connect people – no matter what their walk of life.

Do you have an interest in gardening? If so, please consider becoming a garden partner and help us in the development and maintenance of our next community garden.

Or, please consider making a donation to help us obtain supplies that must be purchased to install a garden (tools, soil, wood, etc.)
